RARE

I will never forget when I worked on the film, "Basquiat" directed by Julian Schnabel, and it was time to do Rene Ricards scene. The DP lit the whole room up with about 30-40 Japanese paper lanterns, Benicio del Toro was off his rocker, Michael Wincott who played Rene was furiously talking to Rene(maybe they were arguing); its the middle of the summer, and everyone(crew and cast) are hot, stuffy, and angry. The tension is so thick in the room, the AD calls for an early lunch. What I forgot to mention is that Julian showed up everyday to set wearing either a sarong or smoking jacket with slippers, and pjs. The rest of the crew were big, burly, tough NYers(except me). I will never forget what happened next. After 1.5 hrs, crew were all called back-in including the camera, art dept, hair and makeup. About 5 minutes later, in came walking into this big apartment were approximately 20 grips and electrics all wearing pajamas and only their workbelts. The real Rene walked up to them and gave them all big kisses. The tension lightened up, the crew continued to wear their pjs for the rest of the day, and we got the scene accomplished. I could never tell who was more flamboyant, Michael Wincott or Rene Ricard. Everyone went around the set screaming art is imitating life. What a day.
